Increasing Breast Cancer Care Awareness in Burke County’s Indigent Patient Population

Grant Award Amount: $28000

Project Director: Ann Ingram, BSN

Institution: Good Samaritan Clinic

Amount Funded: $28,00

Good Samaritan Free Clinic came to the realization that there is a need for increased breast care awareness in the county’s indigent population. The clinics patient base increased three-fold in 2008 with 64% being female. This indicates the need for breast health awareness is increasing. This program also plans to reach out to clients of other agencies sharing our building, to include: soup kitchen, food pantry, utility assistance, used goods stores. Many of these clients are women – many are Hispanic and African American. To help serve large portions of this population, we are negotiating with Western Piedmont Community College to bring more intense language training to our staff. We also plan to do breast health classes that include incentives which will help encourage this non-clinic population to participate. The most effective way to teach the clinic patients is a one-on-one approach. A 20 hour per week RN position will provide individual and group awareness as well as train volunteer nurses. This RN will attend the Breast Navigator Training.
